The Howard County Public School System(HCPSS) ranks as Maryland's top school district on the Maryland School Assessment. Annually, Howard County schools enroll over 47,000 students. HCPSS consists of 6,736 staff including 3,960 teachers. There are 37 elementary schools, 1 Pre-K - Grade 8 School, 18 Middle Schools, 11 High Schools.

In addition to the typical elementary, middle, and high school buildings, the school system offers additional programs in Cedar Lane School and the Homewood School.

Cedar Lane School:

The Cedar Lane School provides a structured learning environment for students, age 3 through 20, whose needs are so complex that they require placement in a special school (Intensity 5 special education program). Classes are provided for preschool and school aged students who are developmentally delayed, and who are intellectually limited, and have multiple disabilities. This program provides community-based instruction and normalization activities.

Homewood School

The Homewood School houses three distinct programs, each designed to meet the specific needs of individual students who have difficulty functioning in traditional classroom settings. The building is a state-of-the-art educational facility with a full complement of resources, technology, and teaching supports.
